northern rosella
- Scientific Name
- Platycercus venustus
- Category
- Birds
The northern rosella is usually called djaddokorddokord in most Bininj Gunwok dialects but a variant djardakorddokkord has also been recorded and a synonym buluwirdwird. In Gundjeihmi some speakers call this bird djadberlhberl but others point out that this is really the name for the red-shouldered parrot and they are using this name because they don't know the more "correct" name which in Gundjeihmi is djikkilirri. The hooded parrot (Psephotus dissimilis) is extremely rare in Arnhem Land but when referred to, the name for the northern rosella is also used for this bird (djaddokorddokord, djikkilirri).
These beautiful parrots are not particularly common but are usually found foraging on the ground around spear grass stands in man-berrk 'savanna country'.
The pronunciation of the name takes a bit of practice for non-native speakers. Here is how the word is broken up djad-dokord-dokord or djik-ki-lirri.
