Northern nailtail wallaby. This animal is rarely seen and almost never caught. It is very small and extremely fast and flighty. C.P. Mountford (in Records of the American Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land, 1-Art, Myth and Symbolism, p. 240 and plate 70C), refers to this animal as a kangaroo rat and recorded the name 'nabut'. He also includes a photograph of a bark painting of the animal, describing fv:ngabudj as "a small kangaroo-like marsupial called 'nabut', a creature about two feet in height. The aborigines assert that this little creature is so fast in its movements that they are seldom able to catch it."
