Merten's water goanna

Scientific Name
Varanus mertensi
Category
Reptiles

The most common name for this water goanna is burarr. In Kune the name is djarrkka which is the same word used by Burarra speakers (though spelt jarrka in Burarra) for the generic name for goannas (and also more specifically Gould's sand monitor). There is a rare Kunwinjku synonym durrbu which appears in the place name Durrbu Wakeng (literally 'water goann crawled') which is a place on a creek on the road to Nabarlek.
