Called man-karlngkinj in Kune, man-karlnganj or dan in Kuninjku and an-galnggi in Gundjeihmi.

Bark for fish poison

Name derived from hairy caterpillars (daarn) that cause severe irritation.

Spreading shrub or tree, mostly 3–5 m tall, but sometimes much taller, often multi-stemmed, deciduous. Leaves alternate, grouped toward the end of branches, obovate to oblanceolate or elliptic to narrowly elliptic, blade variable to 20 cm long and 9 cm wide, generally finely serrated margins. Flowers red with numerous long stamens, 4-5 petals, on pendulous racemes to 40 cm long. Fruit 4 angled or winged, 1.5-4cm long, cream-green when ripe found along the banks of freshwater creeks and rivers, edges of swamps and lagoon and seasonally flooded black soil plains.
