emu apple, black cocky apple
- Scientific Name
- Owenia vernicosa
- Category
- Plants
Lambalk ka-ngun kurrkno an-barlarra, ngurrurdu mak ka-ngun man-me.
The sugar-glider possum eats the sap of the Owenia vernicosa tree and emus eat the fruit.
Names listed here are for both Owenia vernicosa and Owenia reticulata
Called emu apple in English, some of the Bininj names indicate that the fruit is also eaten by black cockatoos. Man-ngarnarrh (Kuninjku) and Man-ngarnarrngh (Kune) suggest that it should be called 'black cocky apple' as these words (ngarnarrh, ngarnarrngh) mean 'red-tailed black cockatoo'.
