black-necked stork (Jabiru)

Scientific Name
Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus
Category
Birds

The black-necked stork is called djakarna in Kunwinjku (spelt djagarna in Gundjeihmi) and kandji in Kuninjku and Kune. For Bininj Gunwok groups who primarily use patrimoieties in social organisation, the black-necked stork is a totemic emblem that is affilited with the yirridjdja  moiety.

The Kunwinjku audio button links to the bird's call and Terah Guymala talking about the bird (in Kunwinjku). The Kundedjnjenghmi link also has a short comment about the bird's behaviour:

Kare ka-yerrkan kore kukku ka-madbun djenj kah-ngun, karri-nan bu karri-lobme murrika o bale nuk.          It goes and stands in the water waiting to eat fish, and we can see them doing this when we drive past in a car or wherever.
