barking owl
- Scientific Name
- Ninox connivens
- Category
- Birds
As well as the name for the barking owl, the name ngokngok is used as the generic term for all owl type birds, including frogmouths. However, in some contexts it is used to refer to all Ninox spp. and contrasts with other terms such as kuluyhkuluy, 'tawny frogmouth' and yerinj, 'barn owl'. In Kunwinjku this generic name is now also used for the southern boobook which was formerly known more specifically as korddol.
