katydid

Scientific Name
Hexacentrus sp.
Category
Insects & Gastropods

Katydids are members of the Tettigoniidae family of the order Orthoptera which also includes grasshoppers, crickets and some other related insects. Katydids are culturally significant to Bininj because they embody an ancestral being who introduced bulbiferous yams into the landscape. As a result in some Bininj Kunwok dialects, katydids have the same name as that used for the round yam, Dioscorea bulbifera.
